People often ask how I decide what makes it into Prairie Peak Provisions. More often than not, I discover something while I’m out using it myself. If it impresses me enough that I’d happily pack it again on my next trip, then I’ll start thinking about bringing it into the shop.
That’s exactly how Flat Out Feasts found their way to Prairie Peak Provisions.
I first tried Flat Out Feasts on a backpacking trip through Tonquin Valley in 2025. If you’ve spent much time in the backcountry, you probably know that dinner isn’t always something you get excited about. Most freeze-dried meals do the job—they fill you up and give you some calories—but they’re rarely memorable. After enough trips, you start to expect that camp dinners are just part of the routine rather than something to look forward to - cue the classic Steak and Rice.
Flat Out Feasts completely changed that expectation for me.
After a long day on the trail, I opened my first pouch, added hot water, and BOOM! - It tasted like a real meal. The flavours were rich, the texture was right, and it didn’t have that overly processed taste that so many backpacking meals seem to have. It felt like real, hot meal after 20km on the trail.
By the end of that first meal, I knew I’d be buying them again.
So when the opportunity came up to carry Flat Out Feasts at Prairie Peak Provisions, the decision was an easy one. I wasn’t bringing them in because I’d been convinced by a sales pitch or because I thought I needed another food brand on the website. I was bringing them in because I’d already become a customer myself.
There’s another reason I was excited to add them to the shop—they’re made right here in Edmonton.
I always enjoy supporting local companies that are building genuinely great products. Flat Out Feasts was founded by Lisa Bélanger after completing the Pacific Crest Trail. Like many backpackers, she’d spent weeks eating trail food that was convenient but often disappointing, so she set out to make something better. I think that’s one of the reasons these meals stand out. They weren’t designed in a boardroom—they were created by someone who understood exactly what it’s like to finish a long day on the trail and want a meal that actually feels satisfying.
Of course, great taste only gets you so far if the nutrition isn’t there (here comes the techy stuff)
What I really appreciate about Flat Out Feasts is that they don’t rely on cheap fillers. The meals are made with real ingredients that are fully cooked before they’re freeze-dried, which gives them a texture and flavour that’s noticeably different from many traditional backpacking meals. They also pack an impressive amount of protein—between 38 and 67 grams per meal—while keeping net carbohydrates to 10 grams or less. Whether you’re hiking, paddling, hunting, or spending a weekend in the mountains, it’s the kind of meal that leaves you feeling fueled instead of looking for another snack an hour later.
At the end of the day, that’s really why you’ll find Flat Out Feasts at Prairie Peak Provisions.
If you’re getting ready for your next adventure and you’re tired of treating dinner as something you just have to get through, I’d encourage you to give Flat Out Feasts a try. I think you’ll understand pretty quickly why I was so excited to add them to the shop.
See you out on the trails,
Camper Dave
