Polarove Socks: Edmonton-made Adventure Socks

|David Arsenault

Most outdoor enthusiasts stick to the same couple of sock brands year in and year out. I get it. I do that too! You want to know that your socks are going to hold up and keep your feet happy on those long trail days. When I first heard about Polarove, a sock brand manufacturing entirely in Edmonton, I was curious—and honestly, a bit skeptical. The outdoor sock category is crowded, and it takes a lot to stand out.

Polarove was founded in 2023 by Robin Vaseer with a simple goal: make good socks in Canada. The design, knitting, and manufacturing all happen under one roof in Edmonton. In an industry where production is typically scattered across continents, it's amazing to see this level of production done locally.

What caught my attention was how Polarove builds their socks. They blend both natural and synthetic yarns through a process called 'plating'. The natural fiber sits against your skin to absorb moisture, while the synthetic outer layer pulls that moisture outward so it can evaporate. By combining the benefits of each type of material into one sock, they maximize the overall performance and comfort of the product. It all sounded great on paper, but the real question, of course, is how do these socks actually perform on adventures.

I've had the chance to wear Polarove while backpacking and hiking locally over the last few months. I also brought some along trekking in Scotland this past September—the kind of trip where weak gear shows itself quickly. Long mileage, shifting weather, and very damp conditions on the trails. After some long days, I was stoked that I didn't deal with any blisters or hot spots, and my feet stayed comfortable. The cushioning held up, and moisture management felt truly comparable to the major merino brands many of us already trust. We all know just how bad it can be to hike when your feet aren't being taken care of! A locally made sock is great, but one that can perform just as well as some of the leading outdoor brands? That's even better.

For me, what makes this meaningful is that there's now a Canadian-made option that competes at that level. I'm proud to be able to offer Polarove in the shop. This is a brand that is rooted in local production and local manufacturing jobs. There's something grounding about knowing exactly where a piece of gear was made—especially something as foundational as the layer between your foot and your boot.

I'm not suggesting anyone toss out the socks that already work for them. But if you're interested in supporting Canadian manufacturing, curious about a different construction approach, or simply looking to try something new that performs the way it should, Polarove is worth considering. They're comfortable, they hold up, and they're made in Edmonton. Sometimes that's enough.
